Help us make our kids food healthier.
What Family Circle wants:
All unnecessary food additives in kids' food banned.
Stricter regulations on what goes in children's food.
All food additives to be clearly labelled with their E number
What is a food additive and why should you care?
Additives are a group of substances put into food for many reasons. They include - Colourings* Flavourings* Preservatives *Sweeteners Thickeners* Bleaches* Stabilisers.
Some are natural (e.g. salt is a preservative and Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and preservative) but others - like Amaranth, which can cause hyperactivity -are just there to make food look brighter.
Our readers always tell us that cutting out non-essential food additives from their diets, has helped:
* Improve kids behaviour at school
* Cut down asthma attacks,
* Reduce eczema flare-ups.
Following extensive research, we're concerned that many of these additives are not needed in kids' foods, and in fact many of the additives used in food in the UK are restricted in countries like USA, Norway, France and Germany.
So why are they in our kids food?
The answer is that although there are strict laws about what you can and can't put in baby food, there are no guidelines on what is allowed in food for kids over the age of three. So basically, food manufacturers can put in what they want!
